Au lieu d&rsquo;une simple d\u00e9n\u00e9gation, le texte propose une articulation complexe du d\u00e9terminisme empirique et d&rsquo;une libert\u00e9 m\u00e9taphysique h\u00e9rit\u00e9e de la distinction kantienne entre le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne et la chose en soi.&nbsp;Que retenir de cette \u0153uvre\u202f?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1f26b5e0ef43f05b2bad132a03458fa5\"><strong>1. La R\u00e9futation de la Libert\u00e9 Empirique<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-4-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c4eed788fb3d50c69bbb6304a0fbc552\">Schopenhauer amorce son analyse par une critique de l&rsquo;\u00e9vidence de la conscience de soi. La question centrale est double : l&rsquo;homme poss\u00e8de-t-il la libert\u00e9 d&rsquo;action (<em>possum&nbsp;facere&nbsp;quod volo<\/em>) et, plus crucialement, la libert\u00e9 de vouloir (<em>possum&nbsp;velle&nbsp;quod volo<\/em>) ?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-4-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e9e8ed1bcb8bae20f9a305de4830eabb\">Il conc\u00e8de imm\u00e9diatement la premi\u00e8re : si aucune contrainte physique n&rsquo;entrave l&rsquo;individu, il peut faire ce qu&rsquo;il veut. Cependant, cette libert\u00e9 physique n&rsquo;est qu&rsquo;un voile superficiel. Le v\u00e9ritable n\u0153ud du probl\u00e8me r\u00e9side dans la libert\u00e9 du vouloir.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-4-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0322a54ee5d92b1ddf758cdb5402e4c6\">L&rsquo;examen du t\u00e9moignage interne, l&rsquo;introspection, r\u00e9v\u00e8le l&rsquo;illusion. Lorsque l&rsquo;homme se croit libre, il ne per\u00e7oit en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 que l&rsquo;acte de volont\u00e9 en tant que tel, sans en saisir la cause intrins\u00e8que. La conscience atteste la volition, mais non son affranchissement des lois causales. Schopenhauer postule que l&rsquo;\u00eatre humain, en tant que ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne au m\u00eame titre que le monde ext\u00e9rieur, ne peut \u00e9chapper au principe de causalit\u00e9. Dans la sph\u00e8re humaine, cette causalit\u00e9 prend la forme du principe de motivation. L&rsquo;action est toujours l&rsquo;effet n\u00e9cessaire d&rsquo;un motif. Si l&rsquo;homme n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas d\u00e9termin\u00e9, ses actes seraient le fruit du pur hasard, une incoh\u00e9rence absolue, et non l&rsquo;expression d&rsquo;une libert\u00e9 morale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a9b0e0f94ae34706f8dc1bc0f7800a9d\"><strong>2. Le r\u00f4le inflexible du caract\u00e8re<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-4-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d356d343752ac6d13cf47ba64b0a521d\">Pour expliquer la diversit\u00e9 des actions malgr\u00e9 l&rsquo;uniformit\u00e9 des motifs, Schopenhauer introduit la notion de caract\u00e8re. Le caract\u00e8re n&rsquo;est pas une facult\u00e9 modifiable par l&rsquo;exp\u00e9rience ou la morale, mais une essence inn\u00e9e, invariable et individuelle. Il agit comme la cause interne qui, alli\u00e9e au motif (la cause occasionnelle externe), engendre l&rsquo;acte de mani\u00e8re n\u00e9cessaire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-4-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-449bfd62df393c7460b60ad278133f2b\">Chaque action individuelle est ainsi la cons\u00e9quence in\u00e9luctable d&rsquo;un calcul inconscient o\u00f9 la force du motif rencontre l&rsquo;inflexibilit\u00e9 du caract\u00e8re. De ce fait, toute tentative de \u00ab changer \u00bb sa volont\u00e9 est futile ; on ne peut que changer la connaissance, l&rsquo;entendement des motifs, qui, en retour, \u00e9claire ou modifie la mani\u00e8re dont le caract\u00e8re s&rsquo;exprime. Un individu bon est n\u00e9cessaire dans sa bont\u00e9, tout comme un individu mauvais est n\u00e9cessaire dans sa malignit\u00e9. Le sens de la responsabilit\u00e9 que nous ressentons est l&rsquo;intuition non de la libert\u00e9 de l&rsquo;acte, mais de l&rsquo;identit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;acte et de l&rsquo;essence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-4-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-697dfb5023fdac4bf921577d5591e7f8\"><strong>La libert\u00e9 transcendantale<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-4-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-064dbaee6c9ef1a32426747117e1cb45\">La conclusion de Schopenhauer est synth\u00e9tiquement c\u00e9l\u00e8bre : \u00ab L&rsquo;homme ne fait jamais que ce qu&rsquo;il veut, et pourtant il agit toujours n\u00e9cessairement. La raison en est qu&rsquo;il est d\u00e9j\u00e0 ce qu&rsquo;il veut. \u00bb Cette formule r\u00e9sout l&rsquo;apparente contradiction en d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant la libert\u00e9 du domaine ph\u00e9nom\u00e9nal (l&rsquo;action) vers le domaine noum\u00e9nal ou transcendantal (la Chose en soi). Le caract\u00e8re individuel, cet&nbsp;\u00eatre-d\u00e9j\u00e0-ce-que-l&rsquo;on-veut, est l&rsquo;expression d&rsquo;un acte de volont\u00e9 unique et hors du temps, par lequel l&rsquo;individu se constitue une fois pour toutes.&nbsp;La libert\u00e9 est ainsi sauv\u00e9e non pas dans le choix contingent de l&rsquo;action, mais dans l&rsquo;\u00eatre m\u00eame de l&rsquo;agent. L&rsquo;homme est libre en tant qu&rsquo;il est une manifestation sp\u00e9cifique et auto-d\u00e9termin\u00e9e de la Volont\u00e9 universelle.
